Astro Awani, Consider This | Kuala Langat Whose Rights Prevailed?

Wednesday, 8 September 2021

Astro's anchors speak with Jia Yaw following the Selangor government's decision this evening to re-gazette the KLNFR and scrap its controversial development plans.

Fresh from the Selangor State Exco's announcement this evening that it will not proceed with the controversial development of the Kuala Langat North Forest Reserve (KLNFR), Sharaad Kuttan and Melisa Idris speak with Dr. Lim Teck Wyn, lawyer Kiu Jia Yaw and activist Meena Raman about prospects for environmental protection and justice for marginalized communities.

Jia Yaw noted that when the Selangor government in 2011 passed the ground-breaking Freedom of Information Enactment and then amended its forestry laws to make it compulsory for the state government to conduct a public consultation before degazetting any forest reserve, it was celebrated as the most progressive state. However, today there seems to be a forgetfulness of the wisdom that the management of natural resources is best done with the involvement of all concerned citizens.
